Riesling McKay’s 2021 – Jim Barry Wines
The McKays is an iconic Riesling from Australia. It displays enticing notes of orange blossom, grapefruit, lemon tart, and citrus aromas. The well-balanced palate showcases limey fruit flavours supported by zingy acidity, which will develop further depth and complexity with aging. This wine is an excellent match for spicy Asian cuisine, such as Mongolian Lamb.

It was Jim Barry’s drive that helped shape South Australia’s Clare Valley as a benchmark producer of world class Riesling and cemented it as one of Australia’s premier wine regions. Jim was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley, graduating with a degree in oenology from the prestigious Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947. Founded in 1959, Jim Barry Wines is still family owned, with three generations of Roseworthy graduates. Jim’s son Peter became managing director in 1985 and today Peter’s children Tom, Sam and Olivia are the winemaker, commercial manager and brand ambassador respectively. Voted ‘2020 Winery of the Year’ at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards they produce highly acclaimed and award-winning wines.
Riesling wine has a colorful German heritage. Today, it has emerged as one of the most collectible white wines among top connoisseurs around the world.
Tasting Riesling starts with intense aromas that rise from the glass. This aromatic wine offers primary fruit aromas of orchard fruits like nectarine, apricot, honey-crisp apple, and pear. Besides fruit, you’ll often smell things like honeycomb, jasmine, or lime peel, along with a striking aroma that smells similar to petrol or petroleum wax. On the palate, Riesling has high acidity, similar to the levels in lemonade.
Traditionally, most Riesling wines are on the sweeter end of the spectrum, in order to balance the wine’s high acidity. Nowadays, there is also a deal of dry Riesling for those who prefer a leaner-tasting wine.
