Sassicaia
In the 1920s, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta envisioned a ‘thoroughbred’ wine inspired by Bordeaux. For him and the aristocracy of the time, French winemaking was the ultimate benchmark.
After settling at Tenuta San Guido on the Tyrrhenian coast in the 1940s, he experimented with several French grape varieties. He discovered that Cabernet Sauvignon had the bouquet he had been searching for.
This decision revolutionised Italian winemaking. Instead of following the Tuscan tradition of Sangiovese, Mario Incisa planted Cabernet Sauvignon. The rocky Bolgheri soils resembled those of Graves in Bordeaux, which enhanced the wine’s structure and minerality.
At first, critics dismissed Sassicaia. They were used to lighter, local wines and didn’t realise that Cabernet Sauvignon needed time to develop complexity. Because of this, from 1948 to 1967, Sassicaia remained a private reserve, enjoyed only at Tenuta San Guido.
Over time, Marchese Incisa noticed something remarkable—aging transformed the wine. Encouraged by friends and family, he refined his winemaking methods. Finally, in 1968, Sassicaia was released commercially, receiving a welcome worthy of a Bordeaux Premier Cru.
Thanks to this vision, Sassicaia became one of the greatest wines ever produced.
