Montepulciano Roma DOC 2018 – Cantina Gaffino
£25.90
A wine made with an interesting blend of 3 great varieties: Montepulciano, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot. A powerful name for a powerful wine, medium plus bodied, elegant with a complex nose. Black fruit aromas and toasted notes on the nose and round velvety tannins on the palate.
Although in this area, near the capital of Italy, wine making is believed to have been present as early as 800B.C. it was only in 2011 that the “Roma DOC” was approved as an official appellation, carrying on its shoulders hundreds of year of traditions.

The winery is located in Lazio, a few kilometers from southern Rome, and covers an area of 32 hectares, of which 28 are planted with vines.
“We are fortunate to have all the characteristics to give the vine and its fruit all that is necessary to ensure healthy and balanced growth: geographical position, origin of the volcanic soils, the right exposure and an altitude above sea level.
Our story is a family story. A story where wine is a love project that draws its strength and its foundations from the work and passion of the people who have dedicated themselves to it for three generations.
In our vineyards only the vines that best adapt to the climate and soil of this area are grown. The grapes are selected on the plant and harvested at their moment of correct ripeness. The different varieties are thus processed and kept separate by variety throughout the winemaking process.
The attention we put in the vineyards and the selection of the grapes allows us to obtain high quality grapes that do not require particular treatments in winemaking.”
Montepulciano
It is a red wine grape grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche, Tuscany and Molise regions.
Montepulciano wines are globally appreciated for their soft flavors and strong color pigments. Gentle tannins and a low/medium acidity create a medium bodied wine that is typically best consumed in a few years after bottling. Although, the variety also responds well to a judicious use of oak to create a richer, age-worthy style of wine. The deep purple juice is used in varying proportions under roughly 30 of Italy’s DOC and DOCG titles.
Montepulciano responds well to blending with other varieties. The most successful by far is Sangiovese, its close relative and Italy‘s most widely planted grape variety.
The blend is permitted in several DOC appellations across Italy, but most importantly in the Marche DOCs of Rosso Piceno and Rosso Conero on the Adriatic coast.
