Sangiovese Toscana DOC Sessanta 2016 – Tenuta Casteani

£20.90

Sessanta is the most expressive wine of Casteani, fully expressing the Maremma region with two indigenous grape varieties, Sangiovese and Alicante Bouchet. It displays an intense and deep ruby red color, with aromas of red fruits, floral notes, aromatic herbs, and the Mediterranean scrub on the nose. Vibrant on the palate, it features crisp tannins and a savoury persistence. An elegant wine of great pleasure. Ideal when paired with game dishes or hearty red meats.
Sessanta was crafted to celebrate the 60th birthday of Tenuta Casteani’s founder, Mario Pelosi.

Tenuta Casteani is a winery situated in the hills of Maremma, Tuscany. Established in 2002 under the guidance of Mario Pelosi, the founder and CEO of the company, it now exports wines worldwide. The winery primarily focuses on indigenous Maremma grape varieties, such as Vermentino and Sangiovese, along with Syrah in amphora.

Sangiovese

It is one of Italy’s most renowned and widely planted red grape varieties. It is considered the backbone of many prestigious Italian wines, particularly from regions like Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and Umbria.
Sangiovese wines often exhibit a mix of red fruit aromas such as cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, along with floral notes and hints of herbs and spices.
On the palate, it typically offers a medium to full body with moderate tannins and refreshing acidity. The flavour profile can vary depending on the region and winemaking style but generally includes a delightful mix of red fruits, earthiness, and subtle oak influences.
High-quality Sangiovese wines, like Brunello di Montalcino, are known for their aging potential. With proper cellaring, these wines can develop additional complexity and gain more tertiary flavours like leather, tobacco, and dried fruit.
It pairs excellently with a wide range of dishes, from classic Italian fare like pasta with tomato-based sauces and pizzas, as well as roasted meats, grilled vegetables, and hard cheeses.
Sangiovese’s diversity and ability to express the unique terroir of each region have contributed to its international popularity and its status as an iconic Italian grape variety.
